Chuck Cast on Getting Naked and Community's Danny Pudi Disrupting Jeffster!

Zachary Levi, Yvonne Strahovski Nerds and nudity. What more could a fan want from an episode of Chuck? Star Zachary Levi directed Friday's episode, "Chuck vs. the Hack Off" (8/7c on NBC), in which Chuck (Levi) and his team are trying to track down a possibly devastating computer virus. "It's one of our nerdier episodes," co-executive producer Chris Fedak told reporters at a set visit this month. "There's not as many hack off jokes as you'd think [there would be]. We learn a little about Chuck's backstory, who he was before he met Sarah, a little bit about the hacker side of Chuck." Chuck creators share their favorite episodes And somehow in the midst of this cyber chase, people get naked. "When I first read the script, I was like, 'How the hell am I supposed to do this?'" said Levi, who's directed Chuck twice before. "We've never done this on the show before. I haven't really seen this done on television before. I mean, I have, but it's on [premium cable network shows]. Game of Thrones is not really throwing blur boxes on their stuff, and thank God for that. It was a fun challenge." Fedak added, "Zach's robe was shorter than Yvonne [Strahovski]'s robe. We were like, 'We made a mistake here.' It was a very short robe." Elsewhere, in the more clothed portion of the episode, the Buy More hires new employee Vali Chandrasekaren, played by Community's Danny Pudi. "We're big Community fans and we just thought there was a character we were building that only Danny Pudi could do," said Fedak. "And so instead of going, 'Let's reconceive this and make it a different person,' we said, 'let's try and get Danny Pudi to do it.' It ties into the Jeff and Lester story." Last time we saw Jeff (Scott Krinsky), he had cleaned up his act after receiving doctor's orders to stop sleeping in his car, which had caused his carbon monoxide poisoning. "He's a little bit cleaner and more together, more mentally aware," said Krinsky. "He's got his faculties about him. It's nice to have a little growth to him and to get to do something different with the character in the last season. And the dynamic between Jeff and Lester, that's been a lot of fun to play as well, sort of changing our roles with each other." In contrast, Lester (Vik Sahay), the other half of Jeffster! was turned in by his former friend and bandmate for attempted murder and was hauled off to jail. "He's been raised poorly, clearly," said Sahay. "He's a desperate, sad, dude who needs love and safety and acceptance very badly, and the only person he got it from was Jeff. And when [the carbon monoxide] got cleared out, Jeff wasn't there for him [anymore]. It created a desperate mania in our boy Lester. He's a broken boy sadly-- kind of why I love him. I feel his insides as I rage out against the world." It doesn't appear that he stays behind bars for long though, as a scheme is put into motion using Vali. "There is a situation in which they bring in a lesser brown guy to try and mimic the Lester game," Sahay explained. "Maybe it snags me a little, it gets to me a little. ... It's sort of a tactic that's used by certain people in the Buy More to lure me." Lester may not be too fond of the interloper, but Krinsky felt that Pudi fit right in. "He looks like he's always worked at the Buy More when he you see him in his Nerd Herd costume. It's like, 'Oh God, he's worked here forever.'" Chuck airs Fridays at 8/7c on NBC.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters First Look: Renner and Arterton

Fairy tales really do come true… when Hollywood is out of other ideas. EW has the first look at Tommy Wirkola’s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, a film starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as grown versions of the Grimm trekkers who once killed a witch during their youth. Apparently the movie takes on a gritty Pulp Fiction vibe while invoking the very real bonds between siblings who’ve suffered abuse and trauma. Bread crumbs and broken lives, y’all. Click through for a first glimpse. Well, look at these little Sci-Fi Network adventurers from 1997! They could follow Stargate SG1 for at least three seasons. Does the ultramarine battle attire read as a little ridiculous to anyone? It’s like the action-adventurer version of denim-on-denim. I want to see costumes out of a kaleidoscopic, futuristic, strudel-centric world, not a rejected wardrobe suggestion for Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Yes, I’m cynical during this onslaught of fairytale media, but I’m just having trouble grasping the allure of simple stories retold as flashy capers. Remember Red Riding Hood? Shudder. If Charlize Theron’s not spewing rancor, I don’t see the point in revisiting olde tales. That said, I hope Hansel and Gretel stumble upon their old captor sipping a gingerbread latte at Starbucks. Go for kitsch, Gemma! Kitsch! Hansel & GreteL: Witch Hunters arrives March 2. ‘Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters’ First Look [EW]

Novak Djokovic Cast In 'Expendables 2'

The already impossibly badass cast of "The Expendables 2" just got even more badass, albeit in a rather unexpected way. Instead of tapping a new action movie hero to join the star-studded likes of Sly Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis, it's an athlete who's joining the "Expendables" ranks. Specifically, the currently number one-ranked tennis player in the world, Novak Djokovic, is serving up justice on the Bulgaria set of "Expendables 2." According to Deadline, Djokovic's role is nothing more than a cameo, but he's already arrived in Bulgaria to shoot his scenes in the film. He won't be moonlighting as an awesome assassin either, sadly, but instead playing a fictional version of himself. Looks like Barney Ross is a closet tennis fan! Anyone who follows tennis and Djokovic's career in particular knew that it was just a matter of time before the showy player strutted his stuff on the big screen, but I don't think anyone could have predicted it would come by way of an action moviea smaller comedy seemed much more likely. Either way, it's bizarre casting to be sure, but casting we're totally psyched about all the same. What do you think of Djokovic joining the "Expendables 2" cast? Let us know your take in the comments section and on Twitter!

The film's plot will apparently start with Edina and Patsy escaping . of mattress hung within the deserted yacht possessed having a magnate with little memory from the products happened without any mobile signal. Although it doesn't appear just like they were on holiday, you need to question why virtually every Uk sitcom picks a foreign destination in your mind due to its film version...

Walking Dead's Robert Kirkman: Lori's Surprising Results Are Only the Beginning

Andrew Lincoln, Sarah Wayne Callies [Spoiler Warning: This story contains details from both Sunday's episode of The Walking Dead and the comics the AMC series is based on.]As if Lori's life in the zombie-infested world of The Walking Dead wasn't already tumultuous, she got some surprising news that will change the dynamic of the survivors. In Sunday's episode, Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) discovered she's pregnant. But whose baby is it? Husband Rick (Andrew Lincoln), who was comatose at the start of the zombie apocalypse? His best friend Shane (Jon Bernthal), who began a torrid love affair with Lori believing Rick had died at the hospital? To find out, we turned to Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, who also dishes on the impending conflict with the Greene family and the return of Merle Dixon (Michael Rooker)! The Walking Dead looks for life after Frank DarabontLori is pregnant! How is she going to deal with this revelation?Robert Kirkman: It's definitely a terrifying thing to consider in this world with the state of things, it's like going back to pioneer days and having to worry about how you're going to give birth and how you're going to survive the pregnancy. This is a very complicated process in modern times, it requires a lot of interaction with doctors and none of that stuff is available, so it's going to be terrifying for her.The big question is whether the baby is Rick's or Shane's. How is that going to affect the dynamic among the three of them in particular?Kirkman: This is going to be a catalyst for Shane. Once he finds out about this, assuming he does find out about this, he's going to react pretty strongly to this. His whole reason for worrying about Lori and Carl (Chandler Riggs) is that they've become a surrogate family for them. If he believes this baby is going to be his, that's just going to solidify his state with this family. It's definitely going to throw a wrench in the whole love triangle thing that's going on.The Walking Dead: 10 things from the comics the cast can't wait to playIs Lori's pregnancy what Jenner had whispered to Rick at the CDC in the Season 1 finale?Kirkman: [Laughs] I can't say. That remains to be seen. All I can say is that it'll definitely be revealed this season. We're getting close to the midpoint of the season, so the likelihood of it being in the first half is looking pretty slim. Will Rick start to clue in to what's going on with the tension between Lori and Shane?Kirkman: Yeah, definitely. The thing is: We never want our main character to seem like he's stupid. That's not something we ever want to do. The audience has been aware of this affair since the very beginning of the show. Rick is a police officer, so I would suspect that he might start catching on to things sooner rather than later. The Walking Dead: Can the survivors coexist with the family at Hershel's farm? The survivors and the Greene family seem to be heading toward conflict. What can you tell us about what's ahead for them?Kirkman: It's interesting to take note that if this show was told from the perspective of the Greene family, then Rick and all of survivors would pretty much be the villains ... Hershel (Scott Wilson), Otis (Pruitt Taylor Vince), Patricia (Jane McNeill) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) were having a pretty OK time on the farm, and then this group came and Otis was killed and now there's this powder keg of crazy people living on the farm. Of course this is going to lead to conflict. We've now seen that Hershel is saying they're going to have to get off his farm once Carl is better, and now that we know Lori is pregnant, and Hershel is really the only guy who has any kind of medical expertise, they've definitely got a lot of incentive to forcibly stay on that farm. Things will get pretty interesting soon.AMC renews Walking Dead for third season Based on the promos for next week, Merle is finally returning. What can you tell us of what he's been up to?Kirkman: All I can really say about Merle's return is that it occurred to us in the writing of bringing Merle back that we never even saw Daryl Dixon and Merle Dixon interact in the first season. They were never in a scene together. Getting to see Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker actually interacting and playing off each other is going to be an enormous treat for the audience and it's something we've been dying to get to.Are you looking forward to Merle's return? Whose baby is Lori really carrying? Hit the comments with your thoughts. The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC.

Coffin

An Artist View Entertainment release of a Skyrocket Prods. presentation of a Spencer Johnson production. Produced by David Stever, Derik Wingo, Kipp Tribble, George Maranville, David Lanham. Executive producer, Spencer F. Johnson. Co-producer, Unique Dowtin. Co-executive producer, Judie Rose Perry. Directed by Kipp Tribble, Derik Wingo. Screenplay, Tribble. With: Kevin Sorbo, Bruce Davison, Johnny Alonso, Sunny Doench, Patrick Barnitt, Kipp Tribble, Derik Wingo, Moksha McPherrin, Andrena Senola Johnson, Luke Barnett.Though its premise and title make no secret of "Coffin's" indebtedness to last year's "Buried," this barrel-bottom suspenser more closely resembles an unsuccessful "Law & Order" spec script, inflated to feature length by some stock horror tropes. The film's clearly limited means are no excuse for the way it applies such painfully languid energy to a real-time ticking-clock thriller, and its only chances for marginal attention will rely on the high billing given to supporting players Kevin Sorbo and Bruce Davison. Pic opens as businessman Jack (Patrick Barnitt) arrives home, where a masked baddie named Trick (Johnny Alonso) shows him a live video feed of his estranged wife (Sunny Doench) and her lover (Sorbo) trapped together in a pinewood box. The windy kidnapper dispenses a bit of Jigsaw-style moralizing before offering to reveal their location for a pricey sum; meanwhile, a pair of bickering odd-couple cops (co-helmers Derik Wingo and Kipp Tribble) follow their trail. Some possibly intentional metatextual humor creeps through -- Doench's character is described as a B-movie actress, while the mincingly unthreatening Trick is called a "real pro" -- but there's otherwise nothing much to see here.Camera (color, DV), Keiko Nakahara; editor, George Maranville; music, Roger Ryan, Jason Gaines; production designer, Gary Jones. Director Brett Ratner was hunting for a completely new composer for his approaching action comedy "Tower Heist." Universal professionals recommended Montreal-born Christophe Beck, the composer of those high-grossing comedies as "The Hangover" and "Date Evening."Ratner visited Beck at his Santa Monica studio and was stunned at the quantity of movie posters round the walls. "The guy looked youthful than me, and i'm like, 'You've done every one of these movies?' " Ratner made a decision to audition Beck: If he could create a primary theme, the job was his."I desired to ensure that it's the essential NY heist movie, a la 'Taking of Pelham One Two Three' or 'The Hot Rock,' " Ratner states. "I desired to make sure it absolutely was urban it's Eddie Murphy and Gabourey Sidibe. As well as in the very first bass line, I'm recommending, he knocked it in the park. He handled to obtain '70s without sounding dated. It's a huge score, but it's awesome, sophisticated, emotional, it is a lot color. It's one of the better scores I've ever suffered.InchBeck, 42, has acquired greater than 70 movies formerly 15 years. Despite the fact that nearly all his large hits are actually comedies -- from "Cheaper with the Dozen" to "Garfield: The FilmInch -- the labeling might be deceitful. Comedy points aren't any much more about while using the trombone to produce laughing noises."Comedies are, For me, harder than some other type of movies because of there being really an anything-goes feeling in regards to the music," states Beck. "Plenty of occasions you're playing it entirely straight. Part of your projects just like a comedy composer is exploring every one of these different genres for comedy effect, nevertheless the music is dead serious."He cites a scene in "I Like You, Jesse Cooper," through which he carried out a towel fight with swashbuckling sailing-adventure music that would not be abnormal inside an Errol Flynn film. "Date Evening," another example, has as much suspense and action material because so many thriller scores.Shawn Levy, who directed "Date Evening" (and four other films with Beck), states the composer's scores "vary extremely from awesome to poignant to regal. More youthful crowd features a critical skill for just about any film composer: He listens. He learns just what the filmmaker is searching depict which he translates people intentions into musical notes."Beck's versatility may be the consequence of musical background including from rock to opera: He started playing piano at 3, completed in the band within the teens, written an opera at Yale and -- although he considered publish-grad be employed in musical theater -- wound up inside the USC film-scoring type in 1992."It had been something I really could be considered a master at,Inch Beck recalls thinking. "It absolutely was a really easy way to make music with other people. I didn't are afflicted by stage fright, writing lyrics or identifying generate an earnings preferred to appear. It absolutely was a enjoyable, behind-the-moments music job, plus it suited me perfectly."He showed up his first series (the Canadian-produced "White-colored Fang") because they used to be at USC, interned for just about any year with TV legend Mike Publish and did several American series ("Two," "F/X," "George & Leo") until landing his breakthrough show, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."It absolutely was after quitting TV in 2001 that things started happening for Beck round the feature side. "Beneath the Tuscan Sun" director Audrey Wells, who calls his storytelling capabilities "transcendent," recalls their 100-piece orchestra giving him a five-minute standing ovation within the finish in the periods.Todd Phillips hired Beck for "School for Scoundrels" in 2006 and states he's not searched for out another composer since, including "DeadlineInch and a pair of "Hangover" movies. "We start talking about tone and designs in prep, so he's already writing music when we are shooting, that's great because we rarely want to use temp tracks."As crazy since it sounds, with my comedies we are opting for reality," states Phillips. "The situations may be absurd, nevertheless the figures and everybody who are around you they live in should always feel just like real as you can. Christophe's music always takes that into consideration. He treats our comedies as stylishly while he would treat any drama."Despite the fact that Beck doesn't consider themselves as especially political, when documentary filmmaker Davis Guggenheim asked for him gain his Obama short films right before the 2008 election, Beck needed the job. Meet the "Hipster Cop" of the Occupy Wall Street Protests

Rick Lee: Wall Street Protest Hipster Cop Hipster and cop are two words that don't usually go together. But at the Occupy Wall Street protests in NY, the two words have become synonymous with a plainclothes NYPD detective named Rick Lee. Why is he known in the blogosphere as "The Hipster Cop" you ask? Because he can be seen sporting fashion brands like Ralph Lauren and J. Crew every day on the protest lines (his best friend works at Ralph Lauren, natch) as part of his style that he describes to GQ as "traditional English country." Catch up on today's latest news "This is how I always dress. I've always been into fashion. Since high school," he says. "Since I got my first job and was able to buy my own clothes. Though maybe I'll wear a top hat to work tomorrow." Lee admits his clothes isn't exactly what most people associate with policemen, but since he serves as a liaison between the community and the precinct, his sophisticated sense of style has helped (even if he gets teased about it "a bit" by co-workers down at the station). "When they see that I dress kinda cool, wear thin ties, look trendy, it breaks a lot of walls down initially to get the bridge building started. It actually works," he says. "People go, 'Wow! You wear Burberry. You wear Ralph Lauren. That's cool.'" It doesn't help that - according to Lee - TV hasn't really accurately portrayed cops since the '70s series Barney Miller. "That's as close as it comes. Otherwise I watch Mad Men, I watch Boardwalk Empire. I watch the History Channel a lot. That's more my thing."

Lotus Eaters

A McGuinnesslee, Fastnet Films presentation with the participation of the Irish Film Board. Produced by Mark Lee. Co-producers, Morgan Bushe, Macdara Kelleher, Kyle Blanshard. Directed by Alexandra McGuinness. Screenplay, McGuinness, Brendan Grant. With: Antonia Campbell Hughes, Benn Northover, Cynthia Fortune Ryan, Johnny Flynn, Amber Anderson, Liam Browne, Daisy Lewis, Alex Wyndham, Gina Bramhill, Jay Choi, Katrena Rochell.Irish helmer Alexandra McGuinness' debut "Lotus Eaters" wants desperately to be a portrait of the beautiful and the damned, with its tale of West London rich kids doing drugs and shagging each other, but it's more like a spectacle of the spoiled and annoying. Pic has some redeeming features, like its glossy, fashion-shoot-inspired black-and-white look, and a clutch of respectable perfs among some very poor ones from the toothsome young cast, but the script is a mess, the characters barely sympathetic. Only niche auds are likely to get high on this. Bony clotheshorse Alice (Antonia Campbell Hughes, pretty good) longs to transition from model to actress, but is hobbled by a staggering lack of talent, revealed in a droll audition scene. She spends much of her time hanging out with her rich, super stylish friends like sassy Saskia (Daisy Lewis), flaky Lulu (Jay Choi) and needy Suzi (Amber Anderson) and their assorted boyfriends, and has an on-off relationship with junkie Charlie (Johnny Flynn, another standout, along with Lewis). Action fluctuates between ultimately monotonous semi-improvised scenes of the kids partying hard and hoary melodrama that reaches a preposterous climax.Camera (B&W, Super 16-to-35mm, widescreen), Gareth Munden; editor, Bert Hunger, Emer Reynolds; music, Birger Clausen; production designer, Richard Hudson; art director, Noam Piper; costume designer, Ruth Higginbotham. World War Z Faces Real Gun Drama

Anti-terrorist team raids weapon storeWhile the action in front of the camera of Brad Pitt's latest, World War Z, revolves around people running away from/killing nasty undead types, the drama behind it is turning out to be just as intense. The latest incident? A batch of weapons that had been planned for use by the production has been confiscated by Hungarian authorities as part of an anti-terrorism mission. And the real problem with the guns? Turns out that instead of the safely neutralised examples that would avoid anyone getting hurt, the shooters were still very much in working order. "This morning a private plane brought guns wrapped in a parcel from a company to an individual [in Budapest," said Hajdu Janos, director of the Anti-Terrorism Unit in a statement picked up by the Heat Vision Blog. "Guns like these are highly illegal to transport even if they were used as stage guns, which hopefully they weren't." Whoops doesn't really begin to cover it...It's not the first issue to have befallen to adaptation of Max Brook's sprawling zombie conflict tome. Fans of the book have already complained about the script's shift to a more proactive storyline which finds Pitt's UNworker now knee-deep in battling the undead menace. Plus, according to Us Weekly, the film, with Marc Forster at the helm, is now over budget and behind schedule after having already shot in Glasgow. Pitt is reportedly "furious" though we'll be taking that one with a hefty serving of salt since Us Weekly isn't exactly known for the searing accuracy in its reporting on any celebrity issue...

Jennifer Aniston and Demi Moore Bring Awareness to Breast Cancer in Lifetimes FIVE

Jeanne Tripplehorn and Patricia Clarkson For Jeanne Tripplehorn, her role in FIVE served as a reminder. "A few months ago I got a phone call saying that Jennifer [Aniston] and Marta [Kauffman, co-creator of Friends] were doing the project and I immediately said yes," says Tripplehorn. "When we started filming, I realized that I hadn't had a mammogram in two years. So I rushed out to get one immediately. My wish is that when people see this film, it will remind them to do the same." Doing its part for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Lifetime is giving us FIVE (Monday, 9/8c) . The quintet of five short films was directed by Aniston, Demi Moore, Alicia Keys, Patty Jenkins and Penelope Spheeris. About 20 minutes each, the stories - with stars including Tripplehorn, Rosario Dawson, Ginnifer Goodwin and Patricia Clarkson - deal with the emotional roller coaster that breast cancer patients and their families endure. The women's stories run the gamut; among them: Cheyanne (Lyndsy Fonseca), an exotic dancer who can't bear the thought of a mastectomy, and Mia (Clarkson), who decides to host a funeral for herself before her death. Photo gallery: Jennifer Aniston through the years Tripplehorn plays Pearl, the one character tying the five tales together. She read books about the disease and spoke with several oncologists who specialize in breast cancer treatment. But the actress believes it was Clarkson who had the most difficult job, playing the role of Mia (in the short directed by Aniston). "She wasn't eating. She had to go from looking healthy to really sick in a matter of four or five days. But she really kept her spirits up." For Clarkson, whose character is facing Stage 4 breast cancer, the challenge was what inspired her to be a part of it. "It was brutal," she says. "There were scenes where my chest was bound so tightly I could barely breathe. But I have to preface that by saying, I'm an actress playing someone with cancer. I'm a very lucky person. I'm not actually going through the disease. And I have witnessed it firsthand with family members and friends." Who are Hollywood's highest paid actresses? Clarkson credits Aniston (also the film's executive-producer) for evoking her performance. "I could never have done this without Jennifer. She's a fiercely gifted director," Clarkson says. "She brought her energy to it, and I brought my energy ... It was beautifully written and funny as hell." Fonseca, whose Cheyanne is married to Tommy (The Vampire Diaries' Taylor Kinney), explains that her stripper character "believes that her self-worth is what she makes a living off of, that her body is what makes her beautiful. And the relationship she has with her husband is a very sexualized relationship, kind of a young, passionate couple. She gets diagnosed with breast cancer and has to get a double mastectomy and it kind of shatters her world completely. It's a journey of her having to dig deeper and realize that she is not her body and that the love that she has with her husband is real." The actress hopes that a younger audience will be curious about her character and tune in to be touched by the story and her co-star's powerful performance. "It's just such a moving story, and Taylor is so good," she says. "There's one scene that he has with David Eigenberg and he just breaks down crying in the car parking lot. I was watching it being filmed and I started crying too. I walked to him and was like, 'It's OK!'" Photo gallery: Demi Moore through the years About one out of every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their life, and the film aims to raise awareness of that statistic. "Far too many women are dying of this," says Clarkson. "They've made quite a few advances, but not enough, honestly. We have to keep moving forward. We've got to keep it in the daily conversation. There's not a person that has not been touched by this disease. It's personal to everyone, and it's touched all of us." Watch the trailer for FIVE: Five airs Monday at 9/8c on Lifetime. John Wayne: The Duke's Private World

This story first appeared in the Oct. 14 issue of The Hollywood Reporter. our editor recommendsJohn Wayne Auction Brings in $5.4 Million Phil Stern first photographed John Wayne just before World War II, beginning a lifelong friendship. Stern, a native NYer, had come to Hollywood in the late 1930s to pursue photography, and except for his years in the Army in the '40s -- during which he became a war hero -- he continued to shoot stars for top magazines of the era, including Life, Look and Photoplay. He captured such legends as James Dean and Marilyn Monroe at the height of their stardom. PHOTOS: John Wayne: The Duke's Private World "I decided at an early age I wanted to get into the media," Stern, now 93, told The Hollywood Reporter during a visit to his home. "It was an exciting concept." His photographs are avidly exhibited and collected, and his work is on display at the new Phil Stern Gallery, which his son Peter opened in January at 601 S. Los Angeles St. in downtown L.A. On Oct. 5, the gallery began a new show, John Wayne: Between Scenes, and Stern is planning on attending the opening reception. David Fahey of L.A.'s Fahey/Klein Gallery puts Stern in a class by himself: "He really photographed behind the scenes. People like Frank Sinatra, John Wayne, James Dean, Marlon Brando -- stars who typically were very closely guarded and not forthcoming with the press -- trusted Phil. He was one of the few allowed to photograph their children. Phil is a real, authentic individual, and they picked up on that." Stern continued to shoot pictures of Wayne through the '70s, up to the actor's illness and death in 1979. His photographs of Wayne, the Duke's pals and family attest to the trust between photographer and his subject. THR has the exclusive photos of Wayne, both in front of the camera and in his private life. Related Topics John Wayne

Summer TV Winners and Losers

Snooki, George Lopez Just two years ago, MTV was struggling to find its footing. Network staple TRL had ended, onetime hit The Hills was on its way out, and ratings were in a downward spiral. MTV faced its biggest identity crisis yet - then along came Snooki and Co. Now, led by the crass stars of prime-time phenomenon Jersey Shore, MTV can easily be crowned the biggest winner of the summer of 2011. Jersey Shore's Season 4 premiere averaged 8.8 million viewers, and the show landed five of the top seven cable telecasts of summer. "Thank God for Jersey Shore," says MTV programming head David Janollari. Those ratings translate to big advertising bucks for MTV, notes Horizon Media analyst Brad Adgate. "I think in the 30-year history of MTV, this has been the strongest they've ever been," he says. "For a network that has to constantly reinvent itself, that's quite an accomplishment." And it's not just The Situation making things ab fab at MTV. Other reality franchises, like Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant, as well as The Challenge: Rivals, are powerhouses in their own right. And MTV's aggressive entry into scripted programming is paying off, via new hit series such as Awkward and Teen Wolf. The network capped the summer on August 28 with its most-watched telecast ever, the 2011 Video Music Awards (12.4 million viewers). Next up, MTV is plotting a major return to animation, via the heralded revival of Beavis and Butt-head and new entry Good Vibes. "We're on a roll," Janollari says. "Our goal is to be the entertainment destination for this young core audience of ours." Adds Adgate: "They have certainly, at least for now, gotten into the zeitgeist of teens and young adults." Here are the rest of the summer's winners and losers. WINNERS Falling SkiesSteven Spielberg and aliens remain a successful combination. The TNT drama, which stars Noah Wyle as a resistance fighter struggling against an invasion of extraterrestrial creatures, was cable's top-rated new scripted series this summer. Falling Skies averaged nearly 7 million viewers an episode and added the term "skitters" to sci-fi's alien lexicon. Several returning scripted series, such as TNT's Rizzoli & Isles and The Closer, and USA's Royal Pains and Burn Notice, also fared well. Broadcast's summer reality veteransBig Brother is watching you - and you are watching Big Brother. Season 13 of CBS' claustrophobic reality hit, promoted as "The Summer of Double Trouble," is averaging 7.5 million viewers, up 4 percent from last year. (The show's adults 18-49 ratings are up a strong 12 percent.) And over at NBC, the America's Got Talent gang also isn't missing a beat. The latest edition averaged 12.2 million viewers, up 11 percent from last year. With plenty of original competition out there this summer, that's a remarkable accomplishment for two aging shows. History's reality brandDocuseries like Pawn Stars and Swamp People have ticked off fans of History channel's old programming. But the network's makeover has paid off big time. Pawn Stars was cable's No. 2 reality show, behind Jersey Shore, averaging 7.6 million viewers. History's American Pickers and Swamp People were not too far behind, along with Storage Wars on sister network A&E. Phineas and FerbIn its first airing, Disney Channel's Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension ranked as the most-watched TV movie on cable so far in 2011. The movie's adventurous tykes continue to rake in viewers via numerous runs across several networks, while the show's cocreators inked a deal to turn Phineas and Ferb into a full-length feature film. LOSERS George LopezA year after TBS bumped Lopez Tonight to midnight to make room for Conan, low ratings bumped it off the schedule altogether. Daily talk shows are expensive, and TBS felt it couldn't justify keeping it on the air. And with BET also pulling Mo'Nique's talk show, diversity took a huge blow in late night. New broadcast reality showsTry as they might, the broadcast networks are still struggling to come up with a new wave of summer reality hits. While staples like America's Got Talent perform well, new shows aren't making a dent with viewers. Among the underperformers: ABC's Expedition Impossible, NBC's Love in the Wild and CBS' Same Name. Men of a Certain Age/HawthoRNe/Eureka/The ProtectorCable giveth and taketh away. Despite fan outcry, TNT pulled the plug on its little-seen Ray Romano dramedy Men of a Certain Age after just two seasons. "They tried mighty hard to justifiably keep it," says executive producer Mike Royce. "I wish we delivered more on the audience end." A few weeks later, it also said goodbye to Jada Pinkett Smith's HawthoRNe. In a bizarre move, Syfy renewed, and then canceled, Eureka. And Lifetime never got traction with the quickly lost The Protector. Says Adgate: "Cable has been a little more aggressive in canceling shows that aren't generating viewers." Dakota Fanning And Emma Thompson Team For 1850s Victorian Drama 'Effie'

EXCLUSIVE: Dakota Fanning will star within the title role of Effie, the Emma Thompson-scripted period biopic concerning the unfortunate marriage between Euphemia Grey and also the famous critic John Ruskin in 1850s London. Richard Laxton (An Englishman in New You are able to) is pointing. Although the teen was gorgeous, Effie's husband never consummated the wedding over 5 years because Ruskin was for whatever reason disgusted by her body. After having suffered via a loveless marriage and browbeating by her in-laws and regulations, Effie fell deeply in love with Ruskin's protg, painter John Everett Millais. Greg Smart will have Ruskin, and Tom Sturridge will have Millais. Thompson plays Lady Eastlake, who takes Effie under her wing if this was obvious the union was wrecking the youthful lady. Julie Walters and Derek Jacobi play Ruskins parents, and Edward Fox is within foretells play Lady Eastlake's husband, Mister Charles Eastlake. He was the primary patron from the Royal Academy, which held sway over what constituted art work. He had been frustrated with Ruskin and the radical ideas before that love triangular rocked the art community. Production will start March. 17 in Scotland, London and Venice. The flicks being created by Don Rosenfeld with Andreas Roald. They elevated the $tens of millions of budget through private equity finance. The foreplay about this movie survived as lengthy the wedding between Effie and Ruskin, but a minimum of here, Effie has got the satisfaction of the start date. On the way, Carey Mulligan and Saoirse Ronan had formerly been reported as circling the Effie role, however the movie's momentum was interrupted when Gregory Murphy required the producers to the court declaring copyright violation regarding his take part in the Countess, that also probed the Ruskin marriage. All of this calculates well for Fanning, who's now 17. Its Emma Thompsons first original script after doing several fine adaptations, also it reaches one's heart of Victorian England, stated Rosenfeld, the first kind mind of Merchant Ivory Productions. Rosenfeld and Roald will also be producers from the Terrence Malick-directed The Voyage of your time, that Thompson has signed onto be among the narrators. The script for Effie was always brilliant, but sometimes this stuff take some time. Rosenfeld stated. The timing permitted these phones enhance the funding without needing to pre-sell foreign or domestic areas. That wont come before film's premiere, that the filmmakers hope can come in the 2012 Venice Film Festival. Exclusive: Jacob Young Returns to The Bold and the Beautiful

Jacob Young If All My Children does indeed move on to the internet as planned, it'll happen without Jacob Young. The Emmy-winning actor has struck a deal to rejoin CBS's The Bold and the Beautiful as fashion-industry scion Rick Forrester, a role he played from 1997 to '99. And get this: Young will hit the air September 26 - the Monday right after AMC ends its run on ABC! TV Guide Magazine got the exclusive scoop from this in-demand star.TV Guide Magazine: Man, you don't waste time. Congrats!Young: Thanks! When I started talking to B&B I didn't think it would happen so fast. But I guess it's good that way. I was looking forward to wrapping up AMC and having a bit of a hiatus, maybe a month or two to travel with my family. As it turns out, I'll probably have my AMC and B&B schedules overlapping and be shooting both shows at the same time. I'm like, "You guys figure it out and point me in the right direction."TV Guide Magazine: Actors should have such problems!Young: I know, right? I'm just so grateful for this opportunity. I have great memories of B&B.TV Guide Magazine: You've been kicking big-time ass on AMC with JR's return to the bottle. I don't know why, but we love seeing your character suffer.Young: So do I! He's the kind of guy who builds himself up and then falls down again... and again. He's much more interesting when he's suffering. I'm real happy with how the character's going down.TV Guide Magazine: It would be so wrong to give him a happy ending when the show goes off the air. Young: They've got me working right to the end with some really heavy stuff. JR's trying to get sober but he's going to spiral right out of it and go off the deep end again. Too many things are stacked against him. He's trying to get his son back, he's losing the company, the house is foreclosing on him. You're right, a happy ending would be wrong. And it'll be good to have some cliffhangers just in case this thing can get picked up.TV Guide Magazine: Were you open to doing this internet version if the B&B offer hadn't come along?Young: I sat in on the meeting with Prospect Park and was listening, that's for sure. I applaud their ambition. I think [the move to the internet] has a chance but my biggest fear is all that time in between.TV Guide Magazine: It's a legit concern since it now appears the reboot won't be ready until January at the earliest. Millions of viewers failed to return to their soaps after all those preemptions for the O.J. Simpson trial.Young: It will take a lot of advertising to bring awareness that the show has moved to the internet and to keep interest going during that gap. Also, this idea of the show moving to a Hulu-type [platform] is confusing to a lot of people. I took a little poll of my mother-in-law's friends - all of them watch AMC - and almost none know what Hulu is or how that sort of thing works. But these Prospect Park people are very credentialed and they told us they'd been developing a Monday-to-Friday serial of their own when AMC and One Life to Live were cancelled. Their take was, "This is exactly the format we're looking for. It has a built-in audience. Why don't we buy the rights, buy the sets, lease the building and see how it goes?" Hey, it's the future. Even if they lose money on this, it's the pioneer effort that will pave the way for everybody else.TV Guide Magazine: First Debbi Morgan. Now you. How'd they take the news down at AMC that you're not continuing?Young: [Laughs] The other day [AMC creator] Agnes Nixon was doing an appearance on our show and [exec producer] Julie Carruthers said, "Agnes is looking for you. She wants to say hello. She says she also wants to give you a spanking!" But Agnes, in addition to being a genius, is a lovely lady. She understood. When I found her she was getting her makeup done. I said, "Agnes, how are you?" She said, "Well, I'd be a lot better if you [weren't leaving]. Nah, it's okay. I just had to put that dig in there! You've been so great on the show and we've been lucky to have you." I think everybody understands. To let opportunity pass by during this time of uncertainty is just kind of silly. I couldn't wait around. I spoke to some of my cast members and advised them all to get out there in the business and see what's crackin'. Anybody with common sense would do that. I've talked to a lot of the AMC production staff and they're saying that if these deals with Prospect Park aren't put in place by September so that the production and the writing can get back up and rolling, it's going to be very difficult logistically. That January launch date would be very optimistic, to say the least.TV Guide Magazine: There are still so many questions. What will people be paid? How restrictive will the contracts be? What about benefits and insurance? There's still a union deal to be struck.Young: It was weird. At our actors meeting with the union, our union rep said, "So tell me what you want us to be fighting for?" And I was, like, "What the hell do you think you should be fighting for? Isn't that what unions are created for? You're asking us?" I've been paying for a pension since I was 18 and I'm not going to let that go. I had to strike while the iron's hot.TV Guide Magazine: You went from B&B to General Hospital to AMC with barely a break in between. Did you ever think about not doing soaps for a while and see what's out there for you in primetime?Young: I've been auditioning a bit lately - I went in for Pan Am and stuff like that - but I'm finding I'm in that weird age range. I'm slightly too young to play these leading roles in primetime and too old for playing the young guy. I'm between a rock and a hard place. But I know this daytime medium really well and I love it. I love the over-the-topness of it. I love working every day. It brings me a lot of joy. Cady McLain [Dixie] and I were talking the other day and I said, "I'd stay in this medium as long as it will have me, until I can't work anymore." It's brought so much to my life and that's the bottom line. To have a steady job and to work as many years as I have is an amazing thing. The whole world's unpredictable now, not just show biz. My uncle just lost his job after 30-some years. Laid off. Done. It's going on everywhere. Do you ever think about that ultimate question: If I was to die tomorrow, would I be happy with what I've achieved? Well, I gotta say yes! Sure there have been ups and downs but I've had a lot of success in my life and a great deal of it has to do with the daytime soaps. I don't regret a moment of it. And since I became a father, my priorities have definitely changed. It's all about family and security now, and in an industry that's so topsy-turvy you grab what you can get.TV Guide Magazine: How did this B&B deal come to pass? Young: Brad Bell approached my management and asked if I'd be interested in returning because he wanted to see the character really come to fruition. He assured me that Rick will return with some very heavy involvement. It was always at the back of my mind that I'd love to return to this role. It was my first part on television and the fact that Rick's still around is almost too good to be true. To go back and make the role my own again is a real thrill for me. I'm eager to work with Katherine Kelly Lang [Rick's mother Brooke] again. We had such a great rapport when I was younger. When they suddenly aged Rick and gave me the part she was, like, "I'm too young to have a kid this old!" That was when I was 18 and now I'm almost 32. [Laughs] I can't wait to go back and bust her!Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!
